About TipTaxCalc

Free, accurate, and transparent tax savings calculators for American workers benefiting from the OBBBA tip and overtime tax exemptions.

What Is TipTaxCalc?

TipTaxCalc is a free online calculator tool built specifically to help American workers understand and calculate their tax savings under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), signed into law in 2025. Our tools cover two landmark provisions that directly affect tens of millions of working Americans:

  • No Tax on Tips — 100% federal income tax exemption for tip income earned by servers, bartenders, delivery drivers, hair stylists, and other tipped workers earning under $160,000/year.
  • No Tax on Overtime — Federal income tax exemption for overtime pay (hours over 40/week) earned by hourly FLSA-covered workers.

Whether you're a restaurant server trying to understand your new take-home pay, a bartender calculating annual savings, or a nurse using the overtime tax calculator, TipTaxCalc gives you clear, honest numbers — no signup, no ads blocking your results.

Our Methodology

Our calculators use a transparent, step-by-step methodology that mirrors how the IRS computes tax liability:

  1. Annualize your income — We multiply your hourly wage, hours worked per week, and weeks per year to get annual base pay, then separately calculate annual tip or overtime income.
  2. Apply the standard deduction — The 2026 standard deduction for a single filer is $16,100 (per IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-32). We subtract this from gross income before computing federal tax.
  3. Compute federal tax on both scenarios — We calculate your federal income tax with and without the tip/overtime income, using the 2026 progressive tax brackets (10% to 37%).
  4. The difference is your savings — The tax difference between the two scenarios equals your federal income tax savings from the OBBBA exemption.
  5. FICA is calculated separately — Social Security (6.2%, up to $184,500 wage base in 2026) and Medicare (1.45%) are displayed separately, as these still apply to all earnings.

All calculations are performed in your browser — no data is sent to our servers. We do not collect, store, or sell any personal information.

Data Sources and Accuracy

We take accuracy seriously. Every figure in our calculators comes from authoritative, publicly available government sources. We update these annually at the start of each tax year:

Data Point
Source
2026 Value
Federal tax brackets
IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-32
10%–37% (7 brackets)
Standard deduction (single)
IRS RP-2025-32
$16,100
Social Security wage base
SSA Annual Announcement
$184,500
Social Security tax rate
IRS Publication 15 (Circular E)
6.2% employee share

State income tax rates
Each state's Dept. of Revenue
0%–13.3% (varies by state)
OBBBA tip exemption limit

State income tax rates reflect the typical effective rate for most filers — we use the standard flat or primary rate, excluding high-income surtaxes that only apply to incomes above $1 million (such as Massachusetts' additional 4% surtax).

Known Limitations

Our calculators are designed for clarity and speed, which means we've made some simplifications that may not reflect every individual's exact situation:

  • Filing status — Results assume a single filer using the standard deduction. Married filing jointly, head of household, and itemized deductions are not yet modeled.
  • Other income sources — If you have investment income, rental income, or multiple jobs, your actual marginal rate and savings may differ.
  • State conformity — State tax treatment of tips and overtime varies and is evolving. We show state rates as context, not as a precise state-level savings calculation.
  • Phase-out mechanics — The exact formula for the $160,000 phase-out may differ from what we show. Our calculator displays a warning above this threshold, but exact phase-out calculations require Form 1040.
  • Self-employed workers — Gig workers and independent contractors also pay self-employment tax (15.3%) on their earnings, which we do not include. The OBBBA exemption still applies to federal income tax, but the full picture is more complex.

Who Built This?

TipTaxCalc was built by a team of software engineers and tax enthusiasts who saw that millions of working Americans had no easy way to understand what the OBBBA actually meant for their paychecks. Every calculator we've built answers a specific, practical question: "How much more will I take home?"

We are not a tax firm, accounting firm, or financial advisory. We build tools. The calculations are based on public law and IRS guidance, but individual tax situations vary — always verify with a qualified tax professional for decisions that affect your actual filing.

This site was launched in 2025 and covers tax years 2025–2028 — the duration of the current OBBBA tip and overtime exemptions. We will continue to update the tool as IRS guidance is clarified and as Congress potentially extends the provisions.
